What Is UIIA—and Why Should Truckers Care?

July 11, 2025

If you're new to intermodal trucking—hauling containers from ports or rail yards—you’ve probably heard the term UIIA. But what exactly is it?

UIIA in Simple Terms

UIIA stands for Uniform Intermodal Interchange and Facilities Access Agreement. It's a legal agreement that lets truckers pick up and drop off intermodal containers at ports, rail terminals, and container yards.

You must be signed onto the UIIA (and meet their insurance requirements) if you want to haul containers from places like ports or railroads.

Who Needs It?

  • Owner-operators pulling containers
  • Carriers doing port or rail work
  • Brokers or dispatchers booking intermodal loads

If you're NOT moving containers, you don’t need to worry about UIIA. But if you want to haul freight like imports from LA ports or rail cargo from Chicago, it’s essential.

What’s Required to Get UIIA-Approved?

  1. Active DOT & MC number
  2. Minimum insurance coverage (liability, cargo, trailer interchange)
  3. Be registered with UIIA
  4. Signed agreements with equipment providers (steamship lines or railroads)

Once approved, you can pick up containers from most major terminals in the U.S.

Bottom Line:

UIIA is your key to container freight.
No UIIA = No port or rail access.
