Running a business takes hard work—and you’re doing it every day. But one unexpected accident, mistake, or lawsuit can cost more than you ever imagined.
We talk to business owners all the time who say:
“I thought I didn’t need that coverage.”
“I trusted my staff.”
“No one told me this wasn’t included.”
Let’s fix that. Below are four common insurance gaps that many business owners have—especially in today’s market—and why you might need them now more than ever.
1. Workers' Compensation – “I Don’t Need It Yet”
Some owners think they don’t need workers' comp until they have more employees. But even one part-time worker can file a claim. Slip, fall, back injury—it happens fast.
And when it happens, it’s too late to add coverage. You may be responsible for thousands of dollars in medical bills, lost wages, and even legal trouble.
✅ Solution: Add workers' comp now—even for one employee or helper. It protects both them and you.
2. Liquor Liability – “My Staff Knows Better”
Even trained employees can make mistakes. If your business serves alcohol—restaurant, grocery store, convenience store, or event hall—you can be blamed if someone:
- Drinks too much and causes harm
- Is underage and gets served
- Gets into a fight or accident
Most general policies do NOT include liquor liability. One lawsuit can destroy your business if you don’t have this coverage.
✅ Solution: Add liquor liability coverage to protect your business—just in case.
3. Assault & Battery – “We Don’t Have Fights Here”
You don’t need to run a nightclub to need this. Fights can happen anywhere—parking lots, break rooms, customer arguments, or even with security staff.
General policies often exclude this, so if someone gets hurt and sues, you’re unprotected.
✅ Solution: Add Assault & Battery coverage so one fight doesn’t become your biggest business loss.
4. Crime Coverage – “Theft is Already Covered, Right?”
Most policies include only $10,000 for theft, and that’s usually not enough. What if:
- An employee steals over time?
- A break-in wipes out cash or equipment?
- You discover missing inventory worth $30K?
That $10K limit won’t go far.
✅ Solution: Ask for at least $50,000 in crime coverage to stay fully protected.
